JORDAN LETSCHERT
The Pentagon is moving an amphibious warship closer to Libya following an attack on the prime minister’s home, a defense official told USNI News on Wednesday.
USS Bataan (LHD-5) and about 1,000 embarked Marines from the 22nd Marine Expeditionary unit are currently in the Eastern Mediterranean moving closer to the country.
The ship transited the Suez Canal on Tuesday and could be off the Libyan coast as early as Thursday.
The ship is embarked with a collection of MV-22 Ospreys, AV-8B Harrier II tactical fighters and AH-1 Cobra helicopter gunships.
Bataan’s move is in response to increasing tensions in a post- Moammar Gadhafi Libya.
Early Tuesday morning gunmen attacked the Tripoli home of Libyan Prime Minister Ahmed Miitig, according to a report in Reuters.
An aide told the wire service, “there was an attack with rockets and small arms on the prime minister’s house.”
Miitig and his family escaped unharmed.

NOMINATE A SERVICE MEMBER
In honor of Memorial Day, Blue Force Tracker is giving away a $150 gift certificate to Michael's on East Restaurant to the family of a local hero.
This hero can be a veteran, active-duty military, or a fallen service member.
If you have someone you'd like to nominate, send us a message with that person's name and a little bit of information on him or her -- We'll post that information on our page, and you can share it with your friends and get them to like it.
On Memorial Day we'll announce our honored family.
It's not much, but it's the least we can do to honor those who live among us who have done incredibly brave things for this country, and who rarely get the recognition they deserve.
And hopefully by posting the bios of these people to this page, we'll in some small way highlight the heroes living among us.
So nominate your soldier, sailor, airman or Marine today!
If you have any questions, shoot us a message.

Bangkok (CNN) -- The Thai army declared martial law throughout the country Tuesday in a surprise move that an aide to the embattled Prime Minister said the government didn't know about beforehand.
"They took this action unilaterally. The government is having a special meeting regarding this. We have to watch and see if the army chief honors his declaration of impartiality," the aide said, describing the situation as "half a coup d'etat."
Lt. Gen. Nipat Thonglek told CNN the move was not a coup.

AN AMERICAN HERO
Could you imagine what it's like for Kyle Carpenter, who will receive the Medal of Honor in June, to sit in a classroom at the University of South Carolina? I hope his professors and fellow students appreciate the caliber of person they have among them.
The 25-year-old South Carolina resident will be honored with the Medal of Honor for shielding a fellow Marine from a grenade blast in Afghanistan in 2010.
Retired Cpl. William "Kyle" Carpenter, a graduate of W. Wyman King Academy in Batesburg, will travel to Washington D.C. on June 19 to receive the honor, according to the White House.
Carpenter is receiving the award for an incident in the Helmand Province of Afghanistan during Operation Enduring Freedom on Nov. 21, 2010.
The corporal jumped in front of a live grenade to shield his friend, fellow Cpl. Nick Eufrazio, from the blast.
Carpenter lost his right eye and most of his teeth in the attack. His jaw was also shattered and his arm was broken in dozens of places, but he and Eufrazio survived the attack.
Since then, the now medically-retir
"I think that carries a huge responsibility and puts a lot of weight on my shoulders to be a positive figure for South Carolina," Carpenter said.
Carpenter attends the University of South Carolina.

MILITARY SUICIDE
To curb military suicides, money for sit-ups or psychologists?
To deal with the rising problem of suicides, SOCOM officials broke from the playbook used by their brethren in the regular Army and Marine Corps, who have poured money into hiring extra mental health counselors, psychiatrists and psychologists. Instead, the command asked Congress for $48 million in 2015 to hire physical therapists, dieticians, sports psychologists and strength and conditioning specialists.

RUSSIA ONE STEP AHEAD
Russia announced Tuesday that it would keep U.S. astronauts from the International Space Station -- an apparent response to the sanctions levied by the U.S. over Russia's role in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.
Last week, the U.S. announced that it would deny export licenses for several high-technology items sought by Russia as punishment for its annexation of Crimea.

NEW MILITARY GROOMING STANDARDS
Last month BFT brought a story to your attention where the Army was considering new "grooming standards" including restrictions on tattoos.
Today :
JALALABAD, Afghanistan — In the works for more than a year, strict new rules governing things like tattoos and grooming for soldiers have been approved by the Secretary of the Army and are only awaiting a final signature, Sgt. Maj. of the Army Raymond Chandler said Saturday.
Speaking to troops at bases in eastern Afghanistan, Chandler said Secretary John McHugh has approved but not yet officially put his name to the changes to Army Regulation 670-1.
Below is a picture of Marine Cpl. Burness Britt who was injured in combat... Guess the Army is more concerned with his ink than the lead and shrapnel he took for his country.
